Social Media Saturday 4/25

Welcome to the first Social Media Saturday!  This is a new weekly feature that I’m really looking forward too.  The premise behind this, is a mashup of links from around the web, personal friends, Twitter friends, or just sites I follow in general.  But what’s going to separate this from Monday’s Link Roundup, is the fact that I’ll be asking my readers (you) to utilize social media, and link sharing sites to increase awareness to the links I post.  While I’ll be posting links mainly from a web and graphic design standpoint, I’ll also occasionally post some stuff that has nothing to do with either of them!

Anyone that runs a blog, or a web site of any sort, knows how hard advertising and getting the word out about your site can be.  By doing this every Saturday, I’m hoping to develop a loyal ring of readers and designers who can count on eachother to increase clicks to eachothers sites.

They’re literally hundreds of social media sites now a days.  I see people who have those tiny 16×16 icons at the bottom of every post, like I do, but literally 50+ of them.  To me, that’s pretty ineffective.  You can only count on a person to share on one site, by giving them the option to share on 50+, you’re essentially spreading your clicks so thin, you won’t get any benefit out of it.  By narrowing down the readers options, you’re able to focus your clicks to just a few of the bigger sites, and reach a higher overall standing, reaping a higher reward.

On that note, I will be encouraging the use of 4 sites to start.  Stumbleupon (stumbleupon), Digg (digg), Twitter (twitter), and Delicious (delicious).

I’m going to “recommend” a social media site for each link (indicated by the icon), but of course you’re free to share it anywhere you wish!  To participate, all you need to do is register an account at any of the mentioned sites.  Once you’ve done that, simply click on the links I post, and share away!  There should be a button on the site matching the social media site I recommended.
